Art In The Open

Saturday, August 25 from 4 p.m. to midnight

A mirrored lake, a giant flying crow and illuminated carousel horses are only a few of the exhibits that will dazzle Islanders and tourists alike this summer as the City of Charlottetown once again sets the stage for a magical outdoor art festival.

Art in the Open returns for its second year.

The FREE visual arts festival, which will take place on Saturday, August 25 from 4 p.m. to midnight, highlights the city’s visual art scene, downtown heritage spaces, exhibition venues and performance companies, and diverse cultural traditions.

The festival takes place across downtown Charlottetown, with focal points at Victoria Park, the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, Victoria Row, Rochford Square and Connaught Square. Urban green spaces are highlighted and play a central role in the event.

The focus of the event is ephemeral works of visual art, primarily including installations, screenings/projections, performance art, street performance and theatre, dance, portable sculpture and other temporary art forms, said Art in the Open co-coordinator Becka Viau, adding this year’s festival is bound to inspire.

“With over 25 exhibits animating select downtown public spaces, Art in the Open will once again be a magical night for people of all ages,” she said. “Basically the whole city becomes alive for those 8 hours.”

Featuring curated projects from a mix of artists from both on and off-Island, the majority of the festival will showcase Island artists and collectives whose projects were selected by a jury earlier this month.

With the success of last year’s event, drawing more than 3,000 spectators, several key partners have joined on to support the festival. The festival is partnered with the Island Fringe Festival, a site-specific performance festival, which takes place August 24-26, as well as the City of Charlottetown, this town is small, inc. the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, the Island Media Arts Co-Op, and the P.E.I. Council of the Arts.
