Top Picks For Rainy Day Eats

Let’s face it, there are days when your patio plans may have to take a rain cheque thanks to, erm, the rain. But hey, it’s great for the farmers, it’s good for the flowers and if you find the right place for some rainy day eats, you’ll be smiling too! Here’s a round-up of spots in Charlottetown and beyond where you can enjoy great food AND entertainment rain or shine.

The Alley
This recently renovated bowling alley on Richmond St. oozes hip vibes with its menu of creative twists on pub food, plenty of local craft beer taps, and a chill ambience. Best of all, you can eat and drink alley-side. Wile away the hours perfecting your 5-pin bowling game, enjoy a scrumptious dinner and forget about the weather outside, after all you just got a strike!

Small Print Board Game Café
Great food and a plethora of board games – it’s the perfect combo for a fam jam or night out with pals. Located in the heart of downtown Charlottetown, Small Print is owned and staffed by board game lovers that will help guide you through the ‘small print’ of any of their +300 board games, which include classics like Monopoly, Pictionary, and Scrabble, to modern favourites such as Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. The cafe serves up a menu of hot and cold sandwiches, classic apps, and game night snacks including candy bowls and caramel popcorn. Local gourmet coffee and Island-brewed beers round out the menu for an evening of friendly, delicious competition.

Top of the Park
Located at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino, the Top of the Park restaurant offers a high-quality, locally-sourced buffet on live race nights (Thursdays & Saturdays) throughout much of the year. Overlooking the racetrack and offering panoramic views from its glass-ensconced, tiered dining room the Top of the Park is the perfect place to find refuge when it starts raining. The races will go on regardless of the weather, and you can enjoy placing bets from your dinner table or simply experience the thrill of being a spectator while you dine on delicious food.

The PEI Brewing Company
As if you need the excuse of rainy weather to head to a craft brewery! But, hey, with beach plans out of commission, you can spend even more time nursing a cold one and chowing down on a hearty meal. The PEI Brewing Company boasts a taproom, coolers filled with bottled beer, a shop showcasing PEI Brew Co. swag and beer-related items, and the comfiest couches you could ask for. Start your visit with a tour of the brewery, then settle in for some seriously tasty beer sampling and pub-style grub to soak it all up.

Mavor’s
Located in the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Mavor’s is a popular pre-theatre dinner locale, and so it should be! With its sultry decor and enticing menu, Mavor’s is the perfect accompaniment to a night of theatre or live music. Or, if it’s lunchtime and the rain is coming down, make your way to Centre’s Art Gallery post-meal and treat your eyes to an impressive selection of Canadian art. Oh, and do take note of the restaurant’s gorgeous outdoor seating area and make plans to return for a cold beverage when the sun’s out again.
