Hidden and Not-So-Hidden Gems in the Heart of Charlottetown

May 13, 2019

Every city has them – those hidden gems that locals flock to and visitors yearn to stumble upon. Whether it’s an old, worn gem that depends on word of mouth, or a new, polished gem that’s got the town talking these local hotspots are sure to give you a sense of why so many folks have chosen to call this city ‘home’.

The Alley -This recently renovated bowling alley combines good ol’ fashioned 5-pin bowling with delicious eats and craft brews that can be enjoyed alleyside.

Small Print Board Game Café – From Pictionary to Settlers of Catan to lesser-known, but equally-addictive board games, Small Print is the perfect respite when it’s raining out or the sun has gone down. And, of course, what’s a board game night without snacks? Small Print serves up a selection of classic party snacks and hot eats – think candy bowls, popcorn, paninis and more – paired with craft brews, sodas and hot beverages.

Back Alley Music – A hub for the city’s music community, Back Alley Music is one part store and two parts soul. Recently relocated to 257 Queen St., the shop specializes in new and vintage vinyl, including a carefully curated selection of well-known and upcoming Atlantic Canadian musicians and bands. And while you’re at Back Alley, treat yourself to a vegan snack or lunch courtesy of Stir It Up, a vegan take-out counter located in back corner of the shop. Locally-roasted coffee is also on offer!

City Cinema – This small independent movie theatre in the heart of downtown Charlottetown features films from around the globe and offers very reasonably priced canteen. Their monthly movie schedule is always available in The Buzz, PEI’s free arts and culture paper, or online.

Marc’s Lounge – Three floors of inviting ambiance and the best drink selection in Charlottetown.

The Next Door Lounge – A part of the Merchantman Fresh Seafood & Oyster Bar, Next Door is also the place to hear your favourite local DJs, play lawn games, and celebrate the favourite season of the year on PEI!

Moonsnail Soapworks – Hand-crafting a full line of soap and natural body care creations since 1995 – unique PEI gifts like Red Clay & Kelp Soap and Island Salt Scrub. Huge selection of local artisan crafts too.

Craft Beer Corner – Featuring 24 taps of craft beer from Upstreet & other PEI craft breweries, kombucha and cocktails. Sit in or take your beer to go.
