Places to Re-Unite with the 70’s and 80’s in Charlottetown

For those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s, the temptation to wax nostalgic about the good old days is strong. After all, what other decades can compete with the brilliance of punk music, teased hair, Reebok pumps, Nintendo and…well the list goes on! Thankfully, there are plenty of spots in Charlottetown where you can experience the 70s and 80s all over again!

BACK ALLEY MUSIC
Vinyl may have made a comeback in amongst the young folk, but for plenty of Gen-X’ers it never went out of style. Get your fill of old-school LPs at Back Alley Music and while you’re there check out the sweet collection of new music from local artists and familiar ones too.

UPSTREET CRAFT BREWING
While the craft beers and sodas on offer at this laid-back brewery are definitely of the 21st century vintage, the arcade video games are most decidedly from another century. Fill up on hoppy brews and tasty bites while vying for Top Player status in your favourite game. And, unlike your childhood spent at the local arcade, you won’t have to save up all your allowance money — the games are free to play to your heart’s content.

THE COMIC HUNTER
Before there were video games and before there was a never-ending stream of movies based on comic book heroes there were, well, comic books. Rare was a childhood lived in the 70s or 80s that didn’t involve an obsession with some sort of comic book series. Find your way to The Comic Hunter on Queen Street for a trip back through memory lane and a fine selection of comics that are sure to strike a nostalgic chord.

THE ALLEY
OK, OK, bowling is timeless, that’s not up for debate. What is up for debate is just how much better bowling is when you can sip a beverage and chow down on scrumptious food while wearing your bowling shoes and waiting for your turn to score a strike. The Alley is a recently renovated space in downtown Charlottetown, where local brews, a creative food menu, and styling alleys converge. So why not go retro, turn off your smartphone and get a group together for some old-fashioned fun at The Alley!

SMALL PRINT BOARD GAME CAFÉ
Board games have been making a comeback in a big way as of late. After all, they’re the perfect excuse to get together with friends to spend an evening trying to claim victory by destroying each other right!? All in the name of fun, of course. Enter the Small Print Board Game Cafe, Charlottetown’s hub for board game enthusiasts of all kinds. With classics that were big in the 70s and 80s like Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, and Monopoly, new favourites such as Settlers of Catan, and lesser-known games, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied for hours. There’s also a board game-friendly menu filled with fun options including candy bowls, popcorn, and rice bowls, as well as a selection of local brews and non-alcoholic beverages.

And there you have it. What’s old is new again and, let’s face it, you really can’t beat the 70s and 80s, so why try?
